Book Club

A book club can serve as an escape from everyday worries for oncology patients and geriatrics, while facing intrapersonal mental blocks. One of the books that will be read and discussed is called, "A Return to Love," a very relevant book for these groups. The book club will provide a sense of community and safe space as there are people surrounding each other that they can relate to, and so all discussions would be significant to each person. This activity will also be a form of counselling as at the I.C.T.A Retreat Centre, a facilitator would take initiative by leading the discussion of the book and encouraging discussion of relating the chapters to real life, as well as any relevant application that should take place in the future.

Storytelling

Storytelling can also be a part of therapy and counselling as the mind can rest and be at peace as patients listen to folklore or fairy tale. At the I.C.T.A Retreat Centre, a facilitator will be dressed as various characters, according to the age group, and perform different folklore and fairy tales. For example, when storytelling to older oncology patients or geriatrics, the facilitator may dress as a Dame Lorraine as it would appeal to their past and bring on a sense of nostalgia. On another hand, the facilitator may dress as a superhero or princess when performing for the children with autism groups. This activity would encourage the patients' minds to relax as it decreases everyday stressors and contributes positively to their quality of life.
